Program Overview & Structure
The Michigan Healthcare Professionals Radiation Oncology Institute (MHP ROI) Medical Physics Residency Program is a two-year, CAMPEP-approved clinical training program specializing in therapeutic radiological physics. Directed by Dr. Tim Nurushev, the program is designed to prepare graduates of CAMPEP-accredited programs to become skilled, independent, and ethical clinical practitioners.
Clinical training is conducted across six MHP ROI facilities in Michigan, all of which are accredited by ACRO and HFAP, providing residents with broad exposure to diverse clinical settings.
In alignment with CAMPEP standards, the program operates under a structured governance model that includes a Steering Committee for overall administrative oversight and a Physics Advisory Team responsible for daily operations, resident assignments, and performance evaluations.
Program Mission
The mission of the Medical Physics Residency Program at MHP Radiation Oncology Institute is to train residents to become competent, independent clinical medical physicists in accordance with CAMPEP standards.
Residents are prepared to:
-
Deliver high-quality, patient-centered radiation oncology care
-

Clinical Environment & Curriculum
Residents train in a comprehensive clinical environment equipped with advanced radiation oncology technologies, including:
-
Varian and Elekta linear accelerators
-
TomoTherapy systems
-
HDR brachytherapy
-
Unsealed radioactive sources (e.g., Xofigo, Lutathera)
The curriculum is structured into eight three-month clinical rotations, allowing residents to progressively build responsibility under the supervision of qualified medical physicists.
Training includes hands-on experience in:
-
Machine quality assurance (QA)
-
3D, IMRT, and VMAT treatment planning
-
Stereotactic procedures (SBRT/SRS)
-
Small field dosimetry
-
Radiation safety
All training components are designed to meet CAMPEP Radiation Oncology Physics Residency curriculum requirements.
Evaluation & Institutional Support
Resident progress is evaluated through a structured process, including:
-
Weekly reading and presentation assignments
-
Rotation task assessments
-
Monthly oral examinations
Residents are employed full-time and supported by MHP Radiation Oncology Institute with access to:
